oh happy day ...

today is the day my sister and her husband celebrate their happy union ... the happy day that i was not in attendance for simply because i was serving a mission ... and they had it planned before i got my call ... in retrospect things could have been different and i could have been there ... but then i wouldn't have this great memory of donning my bride's maid dress and heading out the door to knock doors in salt lake city! i remember singing 'I am a Child of God' as my tribute to the happy couple and my companion chuckling at me as i watched the time and bemoaned the day i could be having and then her prayer that night ... 'and please bless sister wiscombe for her service, especially because she missed out on her sister's wedding today - thou knows how hard it was for her ... please send her extra blessings!' (ok, so i had a little liberty there ... i'm certain she said something kinda like that ... she was just that kind of a girl!)

but seriously ...

and, girlfriend, i love ya!

septem-burrr?? nope, nope!

so far this year's 'bers' are making us say ahhhh! (sept., oct, nov., dec. - get it? they all say burrr at the end ... cuz they're cold months ... i know ... cute huh! but lest you think i'm that clever it was totally plagiarized - i saw it last year on someboy else's blog - so if i stole it from you - don't feel ripped off, 'imitation is best form of flattery' ... right? {smile})

in fact ... it's been SO nice that the girls have been asking to

and ...

what makes this so great?? i get a workout (cuz sometimes the hills are just too much and i have to carry his bike and he rides in the stroller) and have fun in the sun at the same time!!

hooray!!

ps ... he totally picked out his own clothes today ...

and i couldn't talk him out of the boots!!

ammon's first day of pre-preschool!

because of his birthday, ammon has 2 more years until kindergarten ... but we were invited to join a co-op preschool and decided 'heck, why not!' so every wednesday morning he'll be spending 2 hours at school - cuz he's '... ready to learn to get some knowledge.'

headed off to:

after some opening 'business' ie: the pledge of alligence, question of the day and show and tell

it was time for some Color BINGO!

then some writing practice

story time ...

and of course some snack ...

and then the real fun began!!

isn't it cool how even games are learning activities! they were working on left and right and following instructions ... and the parachute ... it was just plain fun!!
i stayed to observe his first day - since i'll be a teacher at some point i thought i better get a good idea of what will be expected of me ... ammon kept telling me that i could leave (now)!! i think he'll do just fine without me ... but i'm not so sure how i'll be without him! so ... here's to school and all the cheers and tears that come along with it!

don't you just love big wheels?!!

remember when life was this easy ...
pretty soon he'll be standing up on the back, pushing with one foot ... and riding fast enough to skid to a stop ... and maybe he'll even turn it over and make some ice cream ... the possibilities are endless with a big wheel!!

i'm going to run a 5k ... just not today!

when i boasted that i would run a 5k and even touted that i would do it faster than some other people ... i was delusional.

case in point:

i sometimes think that those cute-as-a-button girls on the treadmill that jog/run for 30-45-60 minutes have nothing on me and that we might be twins if i didn't have boobs and my hair was blonde.

example #2

i have mentioned before that when i watch movies with jennifer garner or kate hudson or meg ryan or drew barrymore or [insert any other adorable and small actresses name here] in them, i will pretend that andy is the leading man [ie: matthew mcconaughey, mark ruffalo, tom hanks, michael vartan, etc.] and we are actually living in that story that is unfolding ... and i'm actually that petite.

example #3

occasionally i'm surprised by the sheer girth that is my back-side when i happen to see a picture/walk past a mirror and think to myself, invasion of the body snatchers!!

example #4

i have said for years that 'i will only run if someone is chasing me with a knife!' {which now that i think about it ... is not that bad of a policy}

reality check

a person that hasn't jogged/run/anything on the treadmill in several weeks should not ... under any circumstances ... try to/think they can/actually do any running and/or jogging on said treadmill for any length of time after only warming up for 7.5 minutes. that person should work up to a run after 2 or more weeks of walking at a 3.5-4.5 and even then only for short spurts in order to guarantee that she won't be too sore to move in the subsequent days. that person should also remember that stretching and drinking water are essential to survival after the aforementioned treadmill use.

so ... you may have gathered that i have run headlong into soreness/painful joints/aching neck after a foolish attempt at running for 15 minutes!! my music was superb, my adrenaline was pumping and that little voice in my head that said "maybe this is too much too soon" was being drowned by my 'i still got it' pride. and if day 1 wasn't enough to put me in traction... i had the arrogance to tell myself - this is the good kinda hurt that means you're finally working those muscles that have been laying dormant for many many years. i waddled myself back up the stairs to the weight room and climbed back up on that treadmill and winced and grimaced my way through another 40 minutes. it's a good thing i had the presence of mind to attend my yoga classes and get some great stretching in ... so that i could recognize that the parts of me that are in pain ... are not in fact my muscles - but my joints. the same joints that have not been jounced and jostled and jerked and jarred and what ever other j word you can think of that means jolted around in too many years! i have been avoiding going upstairs for fear of having to come down, i've been walking like an old woman in need of hip replacement, i've been putting on my strong face while i walk to pick up the girls hoping that no one notices my waddle.

i'm pathetic.

it's just sad.

and so ... my short-lived alter-ego alter-reality has come to a screeching, albeit sensitive and a little bit tender, halt - for now - until i lose 20-30lbs ... then maybe/possibly/perhaps i'll try running again. stay tuned. i'll still be briskly and vigorously walking the pumpkin push come october 25th.

we hope by christmas abi will be singin' a new tune ...

what a happy end to the first day of school!

first day of school - can we get a do-over?

why a do-over you ask?

we got up late,

and we fought about watching TV or not before school,

and i forgot that these people need lunches,

and couldn't (and still can't) find elyssa's lunch box,

and piled everyone in the car at 8:55 (the first bell rings at 9:10) only to discover that i didn't have a key to the van!! (easton lost it a few days before ... and i still can't find it!!) i called a few neighbors in the ward ... none home ... knocked on the door of a neighbor without school age kids and asked if i could borrow her car to get my girls to school - to which she offered to keep the boys ... but they wanted to go with mom - what a great neighbor, huh!! piled them all in her little hatchback and hustled off to the school, only to arrive 2 minutes before the bell rang. ran over to find their teachers and take a few pictures before they left me for the whole day ...

and ...

well heck yeah i cried!

at least

and they came home happy ...

and ready for tomorrow ...
day 2 was much better!

our labor day campout

[warning: wordy and travel log like ... sorry]
because camping is such an event, i prefer to go for more than one night! our original plan was to go from friday to monday ... then a wonderful man in our ward passed away and we wanted to attend the memorial service and help with the family's lunch ... so we couldn't leave until saturday afternoon.
you may be wondering why we were camping without our friends ... why this is 'our' instead of 'the shawright' labor day campout - among the reasons are: the wrights were all camped-out for this year, the unstable weather and the mommy wright is a wussy ... {did i just say that out loud?}
the weather is always a factor in these parts and we were warned that it might not be the best weekend to camp ... but i was determined to go and so we went! we arrived and set up camp and while we were getting the last of our home away from home prepared, ammon spotted a van coming into camp that looked like the wright's van. we hollered at him that it wasn't them and to come back ... he said, "it is, it's travis, i can see him!!"
"they aren't coming, get back here!!"
and then the van turned in our direction ... lo and behold - it was the wrights!! they hadn't been able to figure out what to do for labor day weekend and so decided to come up for a visit, some play time, zip-line and s'mores!! it was SO great to have them there - it's just not fun camping by ourselves!
the fire was wonderful, the stars were out and the s'mores were sticky - i asked them several times if they wanted to stay but they hadn't brought any of their stuff and nicki was perfectly fine driving home late - as long as she got to sleep in her own bed!
when our friends headed home, we drove up to the flusher toilet/shower and washed the kids feet and helped them don their pjs. the night was short for andy and i ... his machine only worked until 3:30ish and then the battery was dead {let the snoring commence}. easton kept rolling off the air mattress and the cold woke him so i brought him onto our bed and then i couldn't get back to sleep. i finally decided to go into the van at about 5:30 to try and get some sleep, unfortunately our van isn't designed for comfortable sleeping!! by 7 the sun was up and so were the kids ... and so we had to get up! after breakfast we reminded the kids that it was sunday, which meant no zip-line (campground rules) and that while we're camping we can still remember jesus and read scriptures and think about all the wonderful things that heavenly father has given us. we had a 'testimony meeting' and talked about families, went for a walk down by the river and threw some rocks in. then easton threw one that hit abi in the head ... peaceful walk done. we ate lunch and it was time for naps ... we were missing a few things (had forgotten them at home) and so for naptime decided to drive the 25 miles home to collect them. on our way back to camp it started to rain - oh no! i had left the tent windows unzipped to let it air out a little!! when we arrived at our campsite we could see looming dark clouds and hear thunder ... we hurried to close up the tent and get our chairs under cover. did i mention that we were camped next to a covered pavilion? if push came to shove we could huddle in there and wait out the storm!
our friends, alicia and james and his boys showed up just as we were getting dinner prepared. they said that it had been POURING in kirkland ... we were prepared for the worst. we had lightning, thunder, big dark clouds, cold wind gusts ... and not a drop of rain! it completely missed us!!
dinner was delicious - chicken and carrots covered with cream of chicken soup and sour cream in the dutch oven over boiled potatoes, watermelon, and chips ... mmmmm! dessert was even better - alicia was in charge and we made icecream! it was so yummy and we learned 2 things: alicia's always right and teamwork! she even brought brownies and oreo topping! it was YUMMY! i was amazed that we were able to make icecream while we were camping!! after icecream we gathered around the fire for some fire-staring and to listen to james tell a few stories.
sunday night sleeping wasn't much better than saturday night - andy slept in the van so the rest of us could sleep ... easton slept on my mattress with me, he was nice and cozy warm but my mattress had a slow leak and i was hitting the ground ... everybody else slept great! i finally gave in at 6:30 ... i had to pee, couldn't sleep anymore and wanted to get the fire started ... so i snuck out of the tent. andy's throat was sore and swollen from snoring so hard in the night and he came out of the van around the same time i came out of the tent. the kids slept until almost 8:30. we made a big breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes, french toast, bacon, sausage, and eggs - seriously ... we ate like kings this trip!
we cleaned up from breakfast and went up to the zip-line! {it is located near the flusher toilet, making the jaunt double duty!} we went in order from youngest to oldest taking turns ... there were only 2 injuries - ammon didn't get out of the line of fire ... we all saw it happening in slow motion and couldn't get to him fast enough ... the zip-line seat caught him right in the back of his head slamming his face to the ground and elyssa was standing too close when grey caught the rope to drag the swing back up the zip-line and it knocked her in the head just above her ear.
after everyone that needed to used the flusher, we headed back to camp to clean up, pack up, and head home!
james entertained the kids building a 'boat' to float down the river while andy and i loaded up our stuff - he was a lifesaver ... it was great to have the kids out of the way! the boat was awesome and it made it through the 'rapids' but got caught in the duldroms so james and the boys decided that they'd be pirates and sink it instead!! it was so great of alicia to bring the entertainment! after we were locked and loaded we posed for one last group picture and piled in and headed home!

what a great campout {minus the sleeping part} it was an awesome weekend!!
first day of school here we come!
